New Balance Blends Moccasins & Runners for the New 1890

Paris Fashion Week is upon us, and with it comes a ton of new sneaker sightings to cover. One of this week’s most interesting unveiling is an early look at a brand new New Balance model, the 1890, dressed in a snakeskin style.

When New Balance was a fledgling brand in 1906, the company did not make full footwear. They offered an arch support insert for other shoes, before introducing their first track shoes in 1938. They have come a long way since then, amassing a massive archive of different styles geared towards various sports and running styles. Their designs of gotten more adventurous in recent years, like with the 1906L loafer and the Allerdale walking shoe, and this week that unique group of shoes has expanded with the unveiling of the 1890.

New Balance’s senior marketing manager, Lee Stuart, gave us an early look at a brand new model from NB, presumably shared from Fashion Week festivities in Paris. Dubbed the 1890, the new model blends a Wallabee-style moccasin upper with more classic NB elements, like extra paneling and a running inspired sole unit form the 1906. The shoe, seen here in a butter yellow leather look with snakeskin accents, features a traditional two-piece construction ala the Wallabee, adding a series of overlays across the tongues, toes, and heels.

Blending a Wallabee-style moccasin silhouette with paneling and midsoles from running shoes, the new model will be available through both NB and select retailers, though no pricing info is available yet.
