The iconic Nike Air Max 90 has been transformed to fit the golf course, as the revamped design was actually prompted by pro golfer, Rory McIlroy, and his love of the silhouette.

“I wear Air Max casually off the golf course all the time,” McIlroy explains. “Making it into a golf shoe really brings something new to the golf course. Not only is it different and very cool but it also performs well, giving me the comfort, traction and stability that I need.”

Now introduced as the Air Zoom 90 IT, the silhouette essentially maintains its iconic runner profile, while a custom Zoom Air sole is applied in the forefoot to offer lightweight and responsive cushioning. The upper boasts a waterproof, one-piece bootie construction, as a versatile rubber outsole with integrated traction allows golfers to wear the shoe both on and off the course.

Other notable details include complementary laces, matching pull tabs implemented on the tongue and respective branding situated on the rear, side panels, tongue and insoles.

McIlroy recently debuted the shoe this week at the Players Championship. You can purchase this inaugural black/white pair at select Nike accounts on May 13, with the white/black version to follow on June 1st.

Author’s Take

The execution was really well done. I’m biased towards the silhouette’s original design and if I was an avid golfer, I would definitely purchase a pair.
